Community engagement and participation
Host Communities
Since the beginning, Samarco’s history has been linked to the communities that reside in the 30 municipalities of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo that host its activities. The company understands that Social Engagement is or essential for understanding the concerns and needs of people who live in the territories where we operate.
Aware of our responsibility, we seek continuous social dialogue to strengthen relationships with the public in our area of direct influence (AID), and recover and build relationships of trust. We do this through systematic listening to our stakeholders, to understand the contexts and propose cooperative, more inclusive and assertive solutions.
As for internal social engagement, within the company itself, Samarco is aware of its social function beyond job creation. Therefore, it works to achieve a culture that favors diversity, always guided by the values of respect for people, integrity, mobilization for results and safety.
Our contribution to the local economies of the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais and Brazil goes beyond the economic impact generated by the collection of taxes, acquisition of goods, services and material, promotion of their value chain and the creation of jobs work.
Furthermore, we work to enhance contact with communities through social dialogue forums and specific channels for communities to contact Samarco, always based on respect, inclusion and transparency.
Ambition: Contribute to increasing prosperity and resilience in the communities that receive us, acting as a priority in responsible and proactive management of the impacts of our activities
Territorial Development
By adopting territorial development measures, Samarco shows its commitment to providing positive transformations in the context in which the company operates, through actions and initiatives that aim at strengthening the local economy, generate new jobs and improve the surrounding infrastructure.
Regarding socio-institutional investments, the company continues to follow the lines of action of the Institutional and Social Investment Policy (PISS). Furthermore, Samarco boosts the economic diversification of communities, recognizing the importance of reducing exclusive dependence on the mining economy. We work with initiatives to support the strengthening and diversification of local economies, seeking to identify and develop, in conjunction with public authorities, other companies and businesses, representative institutions, businesspeople and the population, their vocations and economic potential.
This approach contributes to long-term economic sustainability, helping them adapt and thrive even after mining operations cease.
Ambiotion Generate value for mining territories and contribute to their development, through multisectoral partnerships that promote sustainable solutions for the region.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Encouraging equity and inclusion means ensuring equal opportunities for all employees, regardless of their origin or identity, through equitable policies and practices. This includes fair access to funds, benefits and professional development opportunities, as well as creating a safe, healthy and respectful work environment where everyone can feel valued and supported.
The Women in Leadership Program was one of the focuses in 2023, expanding the training of female leaders who are part of the Samarco team. Apprentice Program was also launched exclusively for black people, with the participation of 68 young people. During the year, other highlights were the launch of the Equipment (Female) Operator Program, exclusively for women, with 25 vacancies and the Operational Trainee Program, with 35 exclusive vacancies for women and people with disabilities.
